Smalti Workshop - September 25  9 to 5
I will be teaching one-day smalti workshops for those who would like to learn to work with or continue to explore and play with this fabulous material. Smalti is the beautifully colored glass seen in the mosaics of the great cathedrals throughout the world. Smalti is hand cut from a large slab or pizza of glass. Its riven edge is used as the surface giving the mosaic a sparkling, reflective quality. The class will focus on the fundamentals of cutting smalti using nippers to create a vibrant, colorful mosaic. Use of the hammer and hardie will be demonstrated. We will make an 6 x 6 ungrouted mosaic using the direct method. All materials, and choice of designs will be provided to allow you to use your newly acquired techniques and skills. Limited to 8 people.
Price is 150.00

Mosaic Workshop - August 28  9 to 5 and September 12  9 to Noon
We will discuss the four elements of mosaics: the tessera, adhesives, substrates, and grout. Bring with you a 10" by 10" drawing that you would like to create in mosaic. Some designs will be available if you do not have a plan of your own. I will provide colored vitreous glass, ceramic tiles, and stone. You may incorporate materials of your own, for example: broken pottery, beach glass, shells, minerals or other personal treasures. A few guidelines to keep in mind: The pieces that are easiest to use are smooth, shiny and flat. Pieces that are about ½ inch or larger are good. The pieces should be about the same thickness (if you need the surface to be flat.) If you are making a piece of art for display, the pieces you use can be more three dimensional (i.e., stick up from the surface), although the grouting can be more challenging. Limited to 8 people.

Classes are held in my studio in Rockport, MA.  Lunch will be provided.
